João Borges elected Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe

João Borges, Assistant Researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, an associate laboratory of the University of Aveiro (UA), and the Department of Chemistry at the University of Aveiro (UA), was recently elected as a Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe (YAE) for the period between 2024 and 2031.

Founded in 2012, YAE is a dynamic and self-organized group of European scientists and scholars at the early and mid-career stages, internationally recognized in various fields of knowledge. The academy provides well-founded insights on science policy and the contribution of science to decision-making, shaping, and implementing public policies. YAE aims to give a voice to and actively engage young European scientists in scientific advisory roles for policymakers, influence science policies and evidence-based public policies, and contribute to the development of the European scientific agenda for the coming decades.

The main objectives of YAE are:

  • Advising and providing feedback on European science policies to help shape public policies for the benefit of the next generation of European scientists and scholars.

  • Ensuring the involvement of excellent young scientists in the development of the European scientific agenda and the definition of future European research strategies, particularly concerning Long-Term Plans and Roadmaps of the European Social Fund.

  • Promoting evidence-based public policies in all European countries.

  • Supporting and empowering young scientists in Europe in their career development and strategic reflection on the future of their research fields.

  • Creating a network of top young scientists across various disciplines in Europe to foster networking, interdisciplinary scientific collaboration, and knowledge transfer among outstanding young researchers in Europe and beyond.

YAE comprises approximately 170 active members and a growing community of over 170 alumni from across Europe. Young scientists are selected by a Selection Committee and the YAE Board based on their scientific excellence in their respective research fields, international recognition, leadership, commitment to promoting European evidence-based policies, and demonstrated dedication to society.

Researcher João Borges had previously been elected a member of the Global Young Academy and the Young Scientists’ Seminar/Portuguese Young Academy of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in 2024 – https://www.ua.pt/pt/noticias/16/85825.
