Science Cast: Sónia Patrício and addictive manufacturing

The concept of 3D printing has firmly embedded itself in modern technology. However, additive manufacturing—a broader term encompassing these techniques—is often mistakenly perceived as a straightforward, automated process. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Creating three-dimensional objects layer by layer requires meticulous computer modeling and a deep understanding of the materials used. Today, these materials range from polymers and ceramics to metals and even tanned leather.

Sónia Patrício, an assistant researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, exemplifies the productive intersection of fundamental and applied science.

ScienceCast – A Conversation with Science is a podcast by PlaySolutions, supported by CICECO and CESAM, both part of the University of Aveiro.
