CICECO supports the exhibition "PRIMA MATTERS: WASTE AS MATERIAL”. This exhibition is part of the Aveiro 2024 Portuguese Capital of Culture program and was inaugurated on July 13th, at 6pm, at the Casa Municipal da Cidadania.
PRIMA MATTERS is a research and experimental design project focused on the exploration and transformation of waste - plastic, cork, paper and ceramics - with the aim of creating new objects. The convergence between design and science aims to rethink the way we use and reuse waste in a sustainable way. The exhibition is organized into three phases: collection of local waste and exploration of raw materials; sample processing and production; and creation of new objects.
Irena Ubler, responsible for the project, explained that within the ceramics there was a connection with CICECO where she had great support in the preparation of the raw material. It was through this connection that he managed to find various materials such as ceramics, bricks, kitchen shards, broken tiles, trenches and other ceramic waste.
With these materials it was possible to obtain raw materials using a hammer and, bringing the samples to DEMAC - CICECO department, make a very fine powder, which was transformed into ceramic paste. It was also through DEMAC that Irena had contact with industries and large-scale production. At GRESTEL, he discovered ceramic sludge, which has no use, and which became one of the raw materials that we wanted to use and analyze. These processes resulted in samples of materials with different percentages of residue.
CICECO interviewed Irena Ubler, responsible for the project. The full interview can be found here.
The exhibition in Aveiro can be visited until August 23rd.
