The project ECOGRES 4.0 has been named a finalist in the prestigious REGIOSTARS24 competition, organized annually by DG REGIO since 2008. Recognized as Europe’s label of excellence for EU-funded projects, REGIOSTARS highlights initiatives that demonstrate significant impact and inclusiveness in regional development. ECOGRES 4.0, submitted by Grestel S.A., is competing in Category 2: A Green Europe - The Green Transition as the Enabler of Regional Development.
ECOGRES 4.0 represents a pioneering step in the ceramics industry. Born from the successful R&D project Ecogrés + NG, completed in 2022, this initiative focuses on developing sustainable ceramic pastes through a circular economy approach. By incorporating waste materials from both ceramic and non-ceramic industries, ECOGRES 4.0 is creating innovative, eco-friendly product lines.
The success of this project has led to the establishment of a spinoff company, ECOGRES – Ecological Ceramics, Ltd. This new venture aims to produce sustainable ceramics on a larger scale, significantly advancing green innovation in the industry. ECOGRES is committed to reducing waste, promoting sustainable practices, and producing high-quality, environmentally friendly products.
ECOGRES 4.0's impact extends beyond product development. The project has fostered cooperation between industry and academia, particularly through collaboration with the University of Aveiro. This partnership has produced 3 master’s theses and 3 Bachelor’s theses, supported various other projects and events, strengthening the relationship between education and industry.
Furthermore, ECOGRES 4.0's implementation includes the creation of an industrial plant with the capacity to produce thousands of pieces, generating over 300 new jobs, including highly qualified positions, many sourced from local universities. This project exemplifies how sustainable practices can drive regional development and economic growth.
The next phase of the REGIOSTARS24 competition will take place during the annual #EURegionsWeek event in Brussels on October 8-9, where finalists will present PechaKucha-style pitches and participate in jury interviews. Public voting for the best project begins on September 2 on the REGIOSTARS website, with winners to be announced at the awards ceremony on October 9.
ECOGRES 4.0 is not just about creating sustainable ceramics; it’s about transforming the industry and promoting a greener future. By revolutionizing the approach to ceramics and sustainability, ECOGRES 4.0 is making a significant contribution to a more sustainable Europe.
For more information, please visit the REGIOSTARS website and support ECOGRES 4.0 in the public vote starting September 2.
