CICECO SPOTLIGHT: João Rocha highlights the potential of microporous silicates

CICECO SPOTLIGHT is the communication science series of the Aveiro Materials Institute of Aveiro.

João Rocha, a full professor from CICECO, and his team developed a nanoporous material with potential application as a drug to treat hyperkalemia, a condition caused by excess potassium in the blood. Their research, driven by curiosity, led to the discovery of the previously unknown microporous material, titanosilicate ETS-10. The primary goal was to investigate whether metals could be incorporated while retaining the silica and porous structure. Fifteen years later, a company adapted one of these materials as a drug, now available on the market, including in Portuguese hospitals.
