Vítor Gaspar and João Mano involved in discovery of a cancer treatment compound

Vítor Gaspar and João Mano are part of a multidisciplinary research team that has synthesized a promising compound for photodynamic cancer treatment.

The development and characterization of new chlorophyll derivatives have shown very promising results in experimental trials for photodynamic therapy, specifically in treating triple-negative breast cancer and pancreatic cancer. In photodynamic therapy, a biological effect is triggered in certain cells when the tissue or organ where the photosensitizing agent is located is illuminated with light.

The team, which includes researchers from CICECO, also comprises PhD student Cristina Dias, researcher Nuno Moura, and professors Amparo Faustino, Graça Neves (both members of LAQV-REQUIMTE - Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry), and Luisa Helguero (Institute of Biomedicine of Aveiro, iBIMED). The new chlorophyll derivatives were studied in the laboratories of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Aveiro and in the Department of Medical Sciences.

This technology was developed as part of the doctoral research of Cristina Dias, whose thesis will be defended soon at UA. It involved three research groups with complementary expertise. UA, through UACOOPERA, has already filed a provisional patent application and is assessing a broader protection strategy. UACOOPERA serves as UA's interface with the outside world, supporting the university in various cooperative activities with society, valuing knowledge and research and development outcomes, and fulfilling its third mission of societal cooperation.
