João Costa and José Silvares Awarded at ICNNN 2024 in Japan

João Miguel Lopes Costa and José Nuno Magalhães Silvares recently participated in the 13th International Conference on Nanostructures, Nanomaterials, and Nanoengineering (ICNNN 2024), held in Japan. Both doctoral students were honored with the Best Oral Presentation Award.

João Miguel Costa's research focuses on using nanoparticles to measure viscosity wirelessly, a method that enables the creation of a 3D viscosity map through Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) technology. José Silvares' project involves the synthesis and development of hybrid platforms based on polyoxometalates, whose needle-like morphology and chemical properties show significant potential as cellular carriers. In collaboration with the COMPASS research group, these platforms have also demonstrated promising potential for future applications in cancer treatment, as they can anchor to cell aggregates that mimic tumor masses.

João highlighted that the recognition “demonstrates that the topic is relevant and that our work was well-received. Moreover, it raises the visibility of the University of Aveiro in an international context.” José added that “this achievement brings great satisfaction and, interestingly, a sense of relief.” He shared, “we have the responsibility to represent our co-authors, the supervisory team, and the institution well, and it is gratifying to meet those expectations.”

Regarding the key factors behind their success, both awardees emphasized the importance of effectively communicating their message. João pointed out the effort put into designing a presentation that was easy for a general audience to understand and that captured their interest. José Nuno highlighted the relevance and applicability of the work as fundamental. He noted, “I believe the relaxed and clear way I delivered the message helped to captivate the audience and the session chair, maintaining their interest and attention throughout.”

Both doctoral students conduct their research under the guidance of Nuno João Silva, a researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials.

The 13th International Conference on Nanostructures, Nanomaterials, and Nanoengineering (ICNNN 2024) took place from November 6 to 8, 2024, in Osaka, Japan, alongside the 9th International Conference on Materials Technology and Applications (ICMTA 2024). The event provided a platform for participants from various fields to interact and discuss scientific advancements. ICNNN 2024 brought together academics, scientists, researchers, and industry professionals to explore the latest developments in science, engineering, and business, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.
