Workshop discusses waste reutilisation in cement and ceramics

An innovative workshop focused on waste reutilization in the cement and ceramics industries brought together, on 24th November, leading academics, industry experts, and policymakers. The event featured an interesting lineup of speakers, including Prof. Dr. João Veloso, Vice-Rector for Cooperation Affairs at the University of Aveiro and Prof. Dr. Rui Silva, Director of the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering (DEMaC).

They were joined by Dr. Sophie Patrício from CCDRC, Dr. Victor Ribeiro from Revigrés, Eng. Baio Dias from the Ceramics and Glass Technology Center (CTCV), and Prof. Dr. Paula M. Vilarinh, in representation od CICECO. All of whom contributed valuable insights.

The workshop aimed to explore innovative systems for waste reutilization and their potential to transform the cement and ceramics industries. Discussions centered on cutting-edge technologies, highlighting their economic and environmental feasibility. Participants emphasized the need for collaborative research and development, encouraging partnerships between researchers, industry leaders, and stakeholders. Real-world case studies and success stories were shared to inspire actionable solutions.

Additionally, the workshop delved into the regulatory landscape, identifying challenges and opportunities to align policies with sustainable practices. Strategies for integrating waste reutilization systems into industrial operations were also explored, along with methods to engage stakeholders and overcome adoption barriers. A key focus was on assessing environmental and economic impacts, with discussions on methodologies to measure the benefits of waste reutilization, including reductions in waste disposal, energy consumption, and raw material extraction.
