Gabriel Pinto appointed as the Communication Coordinator for the MPI Network

Gabriel Pinto has been appointed as the Scientific Communication Coordinator for the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) Action dedicated to Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) tomography – CA23132 NexMPI. NexMPI is the first European network of scientists working with MPI, bringing together physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, and clinicians from hospitals, academic institutions, and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Gabriel Pinto highlights that the goal is to expand the reach of this innovative technology and create collaboration opportunities across Europe. He also notes that CICECO is the only Portuguese institution with access to an MPI scanner, which strengthened his candidacy for NexMPI.

As part of his role, the researcher will coordinate scientific communication initiatives such as conferences, workshops, and exchanges and promote the development of MPI applications with clinical and biomedical impact. Gabriel Pinto states, “Being part of this European network allows me to exchange ideas and knowledge in various scientific fields, especially as the only researcher focused on applying MPI to magnetic scaffolds.”

In his postdoctoral research, Gabriel Pinto is developing scaffolds integrated with magnetic nanoparticles, enabling real-time 3D imaging during hyperthermia processes. Through this work, he recognizes the potential of combining this hybrid biomaterial with the MPI tool to obtain dynamic images with millisecond resolution.

“My participation in NexMPI facilitates access to other scanners to validate this technology,” explains the researcher from the Physics Department at the University of Aveiro. He is involved in projects that include mobility programs to learn the know-how of different MPI models at European institutions. His goal is to develop as an independent MPI researcher, promote multidisciplinary collaborations, and lead future European projects in the field.

The appointment was the result of a vote among participants of the newly approved COST Action NexMPI, focused on MPI. During the first meeting in Brussels, several experts voted to fill leadership positions, and the young researcher was selected to serve as a scientific communicator in a field still underexplored in Portugal. The appointment has a maximum duration of four years, corresponding to the funding period of the NexMPI Action.
