Women in Science: Catarina Custódio reflects on gender in chemistry & leadership

In 2025, Ciência Viva highlighted more than a dozen women scientists in Portugal whose work was relevant and innovative in their respective fields.

Three scientists from CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials were featured, and we got to know them better. Catarina Custódio is an assistant researcher at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials and the CEO of the spin-off Metatissue.

Her words in "Mulheres Cientistas" by Ciência Viva are:

"My passion for science began in childhood. Very early on, I decided to pursue a scientific course and a research career. I started my studies in Chemistry and later specialized in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. My main motivation is to conduct translational research that contributes to solving real-world problems and facilitates faster access to effective therapies. I feel privileged to love what I do and am excited by the multidisciplinary nature of my work."

Let’s hear what she has to say about women in science, here.
