João Rocha, researcher at CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials, professor in the Department of Chemistry and director of the Portuguese Center for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at the University of Aveiro (UA), has been awarded the 2025 Fraústo da Silva Prize. This prestigious award is granted every two years by the Portuguese Society of Chemistry to a Portuguese scientist who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of chemical sciences through their scientific work in Portugal.

"I received the news of being awarded the 2025 Fraústo da Silva Prize by the Portuguese Society of Chemistry with great honor and deep gratitude," says João Rocha. According to the researcher, this recognition "holds a very special meaning, not only due to the prestige of the award and the remarkable figure it honors but also because it represents the collective work developed over the years with colleagues, collaborators, and students."

"This distinction serves as additional motivation to continue contributing, with dedication and enthusiasm, to the progress of Chemistry at UA and in Portugal," João Rocha emphasizes.

A full professor in the Department of Chemistry at UA, João Rocha is also the coordinator of the Executive Committee of the Associated Laboratories. He founded and led CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials from 2002 to 2022.

João Rocha earned his PhD in 1990 from the University of Cambridge, where he also conducted his postdoctoral research. As a researcher at CICECO, his work focuses on porous nanomaterials, catalysts, light-emitting materials, battery materials, and ferroelectric materials. A highlight of his career is the development of a drug currently used to treat high blood potassium levels, which is already available in North American and European markets, as well as in Portuguese hospitals.
