Carbonate-Free Zn-Al (1:1) Layered Double Hydroxide Film Directly Grown on Zinc-Aluminum Alloy Coating

abstract

Zn-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) film has been directly grown on aluminum-zinc alloy coating at the conditions of either absence or presence of carbonate anions. Based on the comparative analysis of chemical composition and crystal structure parameters of the obtained LDH phase, arrangements of the intercalated species in the interlayer were modeled. It was found that the LDH phase formed on Zn-Al alloy coating in different solutions is characterized by the cations ratio Zn/Al similar to 1 and intercalated with OH- anion (and not with CO32-). The likely formation mechanism of such an LDH phase with low anion exchangeability is proposed. (C) 2013 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.
