Mikhail Zheludkevich

Invited Principal Researcher

Short CV

Mikhail Zheludkevich was born in Hlybokae district, Republic of Belarus in July 1976. In 1993 he has finished high school with silver medal and started studying chemistry at Chemistry Department of Belarusian State University. He got his degree in Chemistry in 1998 and MSc in Physical Chemistry in 1999 with thesis works entitled: “Interaction of copper with atomic and molecular oxygen” and “Investigations of kinetics of iron and copper interaction with atomic and molecular oxygen” respectively.

In December 2002 he defended his PhD entitled: “Influence of oxygen and hydrogen dissociation on their interaction with some transition metals". After short period working as Junior Researcher and Assistant Lecturer (part-time) at Chemistry department of Belarusian State University he moved to University of Aveiro for a postdoc position to work under supervision of Prof. Mario Ferreira. From 2004 he started to establish his own group in close collaboration with  Prof. Mario Ferreira which has grown from 3 members (2004) to 20 members (2013). In parallel to his research activities Mikhail is involved in lecturing the course on corrosion and corrosion protection for undergraduate students since 2006 and on composite materials for design since 2013.

From January 2008 he was appointed as an assistant researcher at the Department of Materials Engineering and Ceramics at the University of Aveiro, Portugal.  From June 2013 he was promoted to Senior researcher in frame of “Investigador FCT” program.

Mikhail Zheludkevich has participated in above 30 research projects. Currently he coordinates Marie-Curie exchange project “NANEL” devoted to electrosynthesis of metallic and semiconductor nanomaterials using ionic liquids. The project joins together researchers from 5 countries and aims at development of novel sensors and solar-cells utilizing suggested electrochemical technology. He is also coordinator of FP7 IAPP project "PROAIR" aiming in development of new surface protection for multi-material aeronautical structures.

The research of Mikhail Zheludkevich led to over 85 SCI journal publications and 6 book chapters in only 9 last years. He has an h-index of 28 a total number of citations above 2100 and average citations per article above 24 (source ISI, July, 2013). In 2010 Mikhail was awarded with a price of Best Young Portuguese Electrochemist. He is co-inventor in the case of 6 filed patents and has delivered 20 invited or key-note talks. Recently he was appointed as Editor in Chief of newly launched journal Self-Healing Materials.

Mikhail Zheludkevich speaks three important European languages including English, Russian and Portuguese.

Scientific Interests

Multifunctional surfaces; “smart” corrosion protection based on “self-healing” effect; controllable release systems in the corrosion protection; nanostructured protective coatings; mechanisms of corrosion inhibition; plasma polymer films for surface engineering; localised techniques in corrosion research.

Mikhail Zheludkevich has started his scientific career being a 3rd year student at university. At that time he has got a first price in competition of scientific works of students and young researchers awarded by Ministry of Education of Republic of Belarus. From the beginning and until defense of PhD thesis his main scientific interests were focused in the area of interaction of atomic gases with metallic materials relevant for space applications. In spite of several interesting findings only a limited part of the results of that work was allowed to be published because of confidential nature of the projects with Russian Aerospace Agency. Therefore a quite moderate outcome in terms of publications was achieved at that period. Nevertheless the interesting physic-chemical effects such as “recombinational reduction” of oxides by atomic oxygen and superpermeability/“pumping” of atomic hydrogen through metallic membranes were reported for the first time.

A new stage in the scientific career of Mikhail Zheludkevich started in 2003 after moving to University of Aveiro. The main scientific interests were shifted in direction of corrosion protection and surface engineering. The novel nanostructured hybrid sol-gel coatings were developed getting a high attention from industry and academic groups and leading to the fact that 11 out of 20 most cited works published since 2005 in the area of sol-gel anticorrosion coatings belong to Mikhail’s group.

The next important step was a pioneering work reported development of self-healing protective coatings based on “smart” nanocontainers of the corrosion inhibitors. Multi-level self-healing approach was suggested by Mikhail and implemented in frame of large-scale collaborative FP7 project “MUST” where he plays a role of scientific coordinator. Different types of nanocontainers activated by corrosion related triggers were developed.

Another important field of his scientific interests is application of multi-scale (from nano- to macro-scale) electrochemical approach for understanding of electrochemical corrosion reactions as well as self-healing processes on active metallic surfaces. Recently research activities are also focused on development of the active protective coatings for magnesium alloys. The results are reported in 4 recent papers. The development in this direction is currently going in frame of national research project FATOMAG with active involvement of EADS IW, Germany.

More recently, he started research activity in the area of electrodeposition of nanostructures from ionic liquids.
