Coordination modes of pyridine-carboxylic acid derivatives in samarium (III) complexes

abstract

Samarium (III) complexes of picolinic acid (Hpic), 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (HpicOH) and 2-hydroxynicotinic acid (H(2)nicO) were prepared and characterised. The crystal structures of the samarium complexes K-2[Sm-2(PiC)(6)(mu-pic)(2)]center dot 7.5H(2)O (1), [Sm(picOH)(2-)(mu-HpicO)(H2O)]center dot 3H(2)O (2) and [Sm(HniCO)(2)(mu-HnicO)(H2O)center dot 5H(2)O (3) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination modes of the pyridine-carboxylic acids to Sm3+ centres have been investigated. These complexes showed room-temperature photoluminescence. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
