Influence of admixtures in the properties of hydraulic lime based mortars

resumo

Relevant characteristics of fresh and hardened mortars can be affected by several parameters, namely, binder/aggregate ratio, kneading water content, type and amount of admixtures. Rheological properties of hydraulic lime based mortars with different binder/aggregate ratios, kneading water contents and variable amounts of air-entraining, water-retaining and plasticizer admixtures were investigated. The increase of water content and aggregate relative amount, or the introduction of an air-entraining agent or a plasticizer promote an increase of mortar workability The opposite effect was observed by adding a water retaining agent. The influence of binder/aggregate ratio, curing time and nature/amount of admixtures on some hardened state mortar properties (compression and flexural strength, capillary absorption coefficient, water permeability) was also evaluated. Less permeable mortars can be obtained by increasing the binder relative amount, decreasing the water content or even by the admixtures addition. Higher mechanical strength can be reached by increasing the binder content, reducing the water amount or through the addition of a plasticizer.
