Electrocaloric-based applications: Challenges and perspectives

abstract

Electrocaloric (EC) cooling is one of the possible alternatives to conventional vapor compression devices and can be used to develop efficient heat flows and counteract forthcoming climate change and electricity shortages. Due to the direct use of electrical power, ease of manufacturing, and compact design, EC prototypes have at last been produced with figures of merit comparable to competing technologies. This chapter briefly overviews various prototypes, their performance, and working principles, and describes challenges and perspectives of how to use these in real applications. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd.
