Mariana Oliveira won the RoosterBio Development Award 2024. The award will enable the research team from CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials and the Department of Chemistry (DQ) at the University of Aveiro to explore new avenues in developing materials that can be shaped in various forms and used to help the body fight diseases by precisely regulating the immune system.
The award will support the work of researchers Diana Tavares, Marlene Correia, Mariana Oliveira, Beatriz Guapo Neves, and Ana Filipa Cunha.
“This project explores a technology based on the devitalization of in vitro cellular tissues derived from mesenchymal stem cells, with applications in controlling immune response. These materials could potentially be useful, for instance, in treating inflammatory or autoimmune diseases,” explained Mariana Oliveira.
The prize consists of $10,000 in products from RoosterBio, a biotechnology company specializing in developing and supplying products to accelerate research and development of stem cell-based therapies, particularly mesenchymal stem cells. RoosterBio's main focus is to offer solutions that facilitate scalable and reproducible manufacturing of these cells, used in various applications, including regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and cell therapies.
The award, as Mariana Oliveira revealed, will allow the team to explore new aspects of the technology reported in the publication Advanced Materials titled "Shape-Versatile Fixed Cellular Materials for Multiple Target Immunomodulation," currently protected by a European patent application.
