CICECO Leads European Patent Applications in Portugal for 2022

CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials. leads the requests for protection of industrial property (IP) submitted by academy in 2022 to the European Patent Office (EPO).

Last year, 312 patent applications were proposed by Portuguese institutions to the EPO. The technological company Feedzai took, for the second consecutive year, the first place in a list, which in the Portuguese case, has more Universities than companies on the top 10.

With the same number of submissions as Feedzai (20) stands the University of Aveiro, where 16 (more than 5% of patent applications) result from the work carried out at CICECO. This Associated Laboratory, founded in 2002, welcomes scientists from the Chemistry, Physics and Materials Engineering Departments and was created with the mission of developing the scientific and technological knowledge necessary for the innovative production and transformation of ceramic materials and organic-inorganic hybrids for a sustainable development. The fact that it ranks second among the most active entities in submitting patents to the EPO does not surprise the Director of CICECO, Professor João Coutinho:

“CICECO has in its genesis a strong commitment to the industrial environment and a great desire to create knowledge and innovative technological solutions. We are recurrently among the Portuguese institutions that register the most patents in the country (INPI - National Institute of Industrial Property) and at the EPO, and therefore being in 2nd place this year in patent registration at the EPO does not surprise us. It is just a natural consequence of our research and development activities. It is, however, curious to see the attention that this fact attracts in a country where industrial property is still undervalued, but where we hope, by our example and by educating our students and researchers, to be able to contribute to change this paradigm, allowing for greater appreciation and economic impact of the industrial property generated in Portugal”
