João Cunha de Sequeira Amaral

Assistant Researcher

Short CV

João Amaral obtained his PhD in Physics at the University of Aveiro in December 2009, and has dedicated most of his scientific career to the study of magnetism and magnetic materials. His main focus of research during MSc. and PhD. was on magnetocaloric materials for magnetic refrigeration applications. Recent research interests include rare-earth free permanent magnets, by optimizing their composition and production through nanostructuring techniques, in a combined effort with the use of theoretical tools such as Density Functional Theory and Ising/Heisenberg models. He is currently an Assistant Researcher (Investigador FCT 2015 programme) at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials and Physics Dept. at the University of Aveiro.

He was the main supervisor of two PhD. students (finished 2020 and 2021), and is currently the main supervisor of two others, and the co-supervisor of another. João has coordinated one FCT exploratory project, and is now the PI of one FCT exploratory project, an advanced computational research project, an FCT-DAAD bi-lateral project with partner TU Darmstadt Germany, and is one of the seven research line coordinators of the 19M€ Bosch Thermotechnology - University of Aveiro Smart Green Homes Project.

He has presented over 25 oral presentations (4 invited) in international conferences. João was an invited researcher at the EXSS group at Imperial College London, from 2013-2015. João has published over 85 peer-reviewed papers, with over 1200 citations (~1100 no self-citations), with an h-factor of 16. João was the invited Editor of Special Issues in AIP Advances (American Institue of Physics), Frontiers in Energy Research (Frontiers) and Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (Elsevier).
