Novel way for controlling the luminescence of upconverting nanoparticles

The recent work on “Electrochromic Switch Devices Mixing Small‐ and Large‐Sized Upconverting Nanocrystals” co-authored by CICECO researchers Carlos D.S. Brites and Luís D. Carlos is highlighted in the front cover of the reputed journal Advanced Functional Materials. The authors describe a novel way for controlling the luminescence of upconverting nanoparticles. By combining the size-dependent thermal efficiency of upconversion in nanocrystals with the electric current-driven heat dissipation in silver nanowire networks, electrothermal devices are fabricated to fine-tune the emission color covering a wide range of the chromaticity diagram.
