Georgina Miranda

Assistant Professor

SHORT CV

Georgina Miranda is Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Engineering and Ceramics (DEMaC) at the University of Aveiro and an integrated member of the Associated Laboratory CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, since 2020.

After her PhD (University of Minho, 2015) she has been actively working in the area of additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, laser approaches for melting/sintering/surface modification, cellular materials and on the design and manufacture of multi-material parts.

She joined the European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA), namely on the European Powder Metallurgy Institutes (EPMI) working group, whose mission is to strengthen synergies between academic research and industry, promoting the exchange of knowledge and the development of high-impact collaborative projects.

She is the author of more than 120 publications indexed in SCOPUS (3400 citations, h-index 33), with more than 60 papers presented at national and international conferences. This body of work has led her to be included, since 2021, on the Top 2% authors worldwide list yearly disclosed by Elsevier and Stanford University.

Principal Investigator of funded projects (e.g. ADAPTPROSTHESIS - Development of smart designed adaptive prosthesis for Orthopaedic Applications (PTDC/EMS-TEC/5422/2014); SMARTCUT - Smart designed cutting tools by Multi-material Selective Laser Melting/Sintering (030353 FCT/02/SAICT/2017); ADD2MECHBIO – Additive manufacturing meets mechanobiology – design and fabrication of osteogenic-stimulating implants (PTDC/EME-EME/1442/2020)), she has also collaborated as a team member in several industrial and European projects.

She has been acting as reviewer for several reputable journals (e.g. Additive Manufacturing; Materials & Design; Progress in Additive Manufacturing; Materials Characterization), as well as project evaluator for national and international entities, including the European Commission.

Supervisor of 10 PhD students, 4 of whom have completed their studies, and of 21 master's students, 17 of whom concluded.

Director of the Master's Degree in Materials Engineering and Vice-Director of the Degree in Materials Engineering at the University of Aveiro. Professor in several curricular units (e.g. Metallurgical Technology, Mechanical and Thermal Behavior of Materials, Welding Metallurgy II), taught in several Bachelor's and Master's courses at the University of Aveiro.

SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS

After joining the University of Aveiro, DEMaC and CICECO, she  establishes the “Materials Design and Manufacturing Laboratory”, where the following areas are developed:

Additive manufacturing of metal alloys;

Powder metallurgy, especially for the development of metal matrix composites;

Manufacturing of multi-material components through a combination of technologies;

Sustainable Surface Treatments of Complex Shape Components for Transsectorial Industrial Innovation (SURE2COAT)

PartnerEuropean Comission
Light alloys, like Al, have shown to be good options for replacing steel in many sectors due to higher thermal conductivity and weight reduction they allow, which has become crucial e.g. for e-mobility. However, without protection, recycled Al is prone to corrosion under operation in harsh environments (e.g. heat exchangers in heat stor...
